What is DNS?
When data is transmitted across the internet from one computer to another, the individual data packets are addressed using an IP, or Internet Protocol, number. Every server and every personal computer connected to the internet has a unique IP to make sure that all the data arrives complete in the proper place. When a user's computer sends a request for data to your server, it uses the server's IP address. The server then returns the requested data to the user's IP. However, most of the time users don't type numbers into their browsers. That's where DNS comes in. The domain names typed by the user are sent by the user's ISP to a master database located on a Domain Name Server (DNS). The name is matched to an IP number which is returned to the user's local machine. Finally, the local machine uses the IP address to direct the data request to your server.

Domain Name Tips
- Make it personal!
Match your domain name as closely as possible to the name
of your business. For many internet users, the first step in locating you is
typing www.(your name).com right into their browser.
- Tell what you sell!
If your business name has already been reserved by someone
else, try a URL which relates to the products or services you are offering.
Users who type the product they are looking for into their browsers can be
directly connected to your site.
- Keep it Simple!
Though long URLs are less likely to be reserved by other users, they can create problems for internet users trying to find your site. Difficult or unusual spellings, hyphenated domains, and multi-word URLs can give you a unique domain name, but they may not deliver the traffic you want. www.computerhouseconsultingassociates.com is bulky and confusing; www.computerhouse.com is streamlined and effective.
- Use the right extension!
The .com TLD, or domain extension, was created for use by commercial interests. Any profit organization should end in .com. Non-profit organizations may use the .org
TLD, and .net is predominantly used by e-mail hosts and ISPs. Using the right TLD will help bring you the audience you're looking for.

Choosing Extensions and Claiming Your Domain
Once you have determined the availability of your domain name, you will be offered a list of options regarding your domain reservation and access. You will be able to select up to six extensions (e.g.
www.computerhouse.com, www.computerhouse.info, www.computerhouse.biz), and you
will also be prompted to create a username and password for managing your
account. Your username need not be unique, and should be something you will
remember. You will need to enter your password twice to safeguard against
accidental misspelling; enter the SAME PASSWORD IN BOTH BOXES. The second entry
is a confirmation, and entering two different passwords will result in an error
message.

Your Contact Information
After you have chosen your username and password, you will choose the duration of your domain registration. You may register a domain for a period of 1 to 10 years. You will also be asked for your contact and payment information. This information is transferred via secure connection and will remain confidential. To avoid difficulties in charging your card, please make sure that the name and address under "Billing Address" are an exact match with the information appearing on your credit card. After submitting your information you will have a chance to review the data you entered. Please check carefully to make sure that your domain registration is successful. Pressing "Order Now" at this stage will send the information on the screen to the DNS registry, so please be sure that ALL the information is correct.
If there is an error in the information you entered, you will have the option of returning to the information form and correcting the problem. Click on "Order Now" ONLY when you have completed all corrections.
